94. Michael Kenna: Forty-six photographs for Thomas Jefferson’s Paris Walks
Arion Press’s ninety-fourth publication, Thomas Jefferson’s Paris Walks, is a tribute to Jefferson the walker and to the city whose beauty inspired him to explore it on foot.
In the fall of 2011, Arion Press invited the photographer Michael Kenna, acclaimed for his work on French landscape and gardens, to follow Jefferson’s footsteps in Paris. The result is a series of forty-six black-and-white photographs of Paris, published here for the first time. Besides beloved landmarks such as the Pont Royal, Louvre, and Palais Royal, Kenna found forgotten Jefferson sites, such as his daughters’ convent school, the gardens of the Hôtel de Salm, and the interiors of the Mint, adding a fresh visual record to this fascinating chapter in French and American history.
A portion of the book edition may be purchased with an accompanying sepia-toned silver gelatin print, approximately 7¾ x 7¾ inches, printed, signed, and numbered by Michael Kenna and dry-mounted on museum board, measuring 16 x 20 inches, with window mats. Buyers may choose any image or images in the book, with the proviso that a limited number of prints of each image will be offered. The book and photograph together are $2,600; the cost of additional prints is $2,000.
