Sam Shepard was admitted to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1986, the same year that A Lie of the Mind was named best new play of the season by the New York Drama Critics Circle. Stan Washburn was once involved in a staging and approached the artwork with an insider’s knowledge. His illustrations, done in a combination of black ink drawing and scratchboard, capture the brutality and spontaneity of the play.
