Professor Helen Vendler of Harvard selected the poems and wrote an introductory essay discussing how the Civil War and Melville’s travels in Europe and the Holy Land influenced his writings.

This volume uses the same hand-made paper, the same typeface, the same binding leather, and the same artist, Barry Moser, as our 1979 folio edition of Moby-Dick.

The paper, from the Barcham Green Mill in England, was handmade in 1978 to the specifications of Arion Press. Tinted pale blue, it includes watermarks of the mill, the press, and a sperm whale. The frontispiece, a portrait of the older Melville, is printed from a relief block cut by the artist.
