Graham Greene’s great comic espionage novel presents the story of Jim Wormold, the hapless vacuum cleaner salesman recruited by British Intelligence. “High-comic mayhem” is how Christopher Buckley describes the consequences when the novel’s protagonist, an English expatriate living in Cuba in the 1950s, sends his Intelligence superiors schematic drawings of the vacuum cleaners that he sells for a meager living, passing them off as plans for secret weapons facilities. This edition is illustrated by William Hamilton, best known for his satirical New Yorker cartoons.
