Sappho is the only woman whose poetry survived from antiquity; what remains of her poems are fragments of a vanished whole, and all the more resonant for being so. Julie Mehretu’s calligraphic marks seem to be expressions of an ancient undecipherable literature.

This edition features facing pages of Greek texts and their English translations, with Mehretu’s double-page prints interspersed throughout.
