27. Ulysses by James Joyce, with art by Robert Motherwell.
Ulysses by James Joyce, with 40 etchings, of which 20 are in color, by Robert Motherwell, 1988.
Considered by many the greatest novel of the twentieth century, Joyce's Ulysses deserved this typographical tribute and the artistic contribution of a painter of international stature. Robert Motherwell (1915-1991), a founder of Abstract Expressionism, counted Joyce as his favorite modern author and drew upon the writings for titles to his paintings, drawings, and prints throughout his career. The project was four years in planning and a year and a half in production. The text benefits from current scholarship. The book and prints were exhibited at the gallery representing Motherwell, Knoedler & Company in New York City, in 1989.
Format: 12-3/4 by 9-3/4 inches, 838 numbered pages, plus blanks, and 40 unnumbered pages for the prints. The type is Monotype and handset Perpetua, printed by letterpress on French mouldmade Johannot. The intaglio printing was done by R. E. Townsend, Inc., Georgetown, Massachusetts, in black and 19 colors on heavier-weight Johannot. Bound with white, alum-tawed pigskin on the spine and fore-edges of the boards, which are covered in blue cloth with white flecks. The book is presented in a slipcase covered with the same fabric. Distributed with the edition is The Ulysses Etchings of Robert Motherwell, an interview with the artist by Professor David Hayman and a foreword by Andrew Hoyem, format 9-3/4 by 6-1/2 inches, 28 pages, in blue paper wrappers. Edition of 150 copies, $7,500.00. Out of print.
An extra suite of 22 of the Motherwell etchings was published simultaneously with the book. The prints were editioned on heavy-weight Johannot, torn to 13 by 10 inches. Each etching is numbered and signed by the artist and is contained in a folder with a reduction of the image and the source for the title from Joyce's entries in his "Schema". Presented in a portfolio box covered with the same fabric as used on the book and slipcase. Edition of 40 copies, sold with the book. $30,000.00. Out of print.
