31. Poems of W. B. Yeats, with art by Richard Diebenkorn.
Poems of W. B. Yeats selected and introduced by Helen Vendler, with six etchings by Richard Diebenkorn, 1990.
The poetry of William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) burst the boundaries of its native Ireland to become part of world culture. Helen Vendler, one of the foremost authorities on modern poetry and a University Professor at Harvard, selected for the Arion Press 145 poems and provided an introductory essay for the book. Richard Diebenkorn (1922-93), internationally recognized as one of America's leading artists, took the Yeatsian theme of an empty coat on a hanger to produce a series of prints transforming the garment from a representational frock-coat into an abstracted suit-bag. The sixth etching is a double map of Ireland, indicative of that divided country.
Format: 10-1/4 by 8 inches, 200 numbered pages for the text and 24 unnumbered pages for the prints, their titles, and quotations. The text type is Monotype Baskerville with poem titles in handset Worrel Uncial printed in red. The etchings, plate size 8-1/2 by 6-1/2 inches, were editioned by R. E. Townsend, Inc., Georgetown, Massachusetts. The paper is English mouldmade Somerset from the Inveresk Mill, with a heavier weight used for the prints. The binding has a deep red goatskin spine with dark green cloth over boards, and is enclosed in a slipcase of green cloth and red paper. Numbered and signed by the artist. Edition of 400 copies, $1,500. Out of print.
An extra suite of the six Diebenkorn prints was editioned on English handmade paper from the Barcham Green Mill, 17-1/2 by 13-1/2 inches. The suite has a title page and is interleaved with sheets bearing the quotations from Yeats' poetry that face the prints in the book. It is presented in a portfolio box. The prints are numbered and signed by the artist. Edition of 40 suites, sold with the book, $15,000. Out of print.*
