36. Thirty-three Sonnets of Guido Cavalcanti, with art by Joseph GoldyneThirty-three Sonnets of Guido Cavalcanti, translated by Ezra Pound, with introductory essays by Hugh Kenner and by Lowry Nelson, Jr., who edited the Italian texts and prepared prose translations and commentaries, and with an etching in colors by Joseph Goldyne, 1991. The poetry of Cavalcanti, a leading poet of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries and a close friend of Dante, was rescued from virtual obscurity by the great American poet Ezra Pound. Pound's esteem for the Italian poet led him to translate the poetry into English. The Arion edition provides four simultaneous, alternative means of comprehending the sonnets: the Pound translations; the original Italian; line-for-line prose translations; and commentaries. Professor Nelson introduces Cavalcanti's life and work, while Professor Kenner's introductory essay discusses Pound's career-long involvement with Cavalcanti. The etching by the well-known San Francisco-based artist Joseph Goldyne is entitled "Messager del core" (heart's messenger), from a sonnet by Guido Cavalcanti addressed to Dante Alighieri and featured in the book.
